Sustainability was integral to the design of the new HSBC Place with a priority on reducing environmental impacts, creating a healthy workplace, and ensuring business continuity with high connectivity.
HSBC Place is pursuing the following certifications:
BOMA International TOBY® (Achieved)
TOBY (which stands for The Outstanding Building of the Year) is the most prestigious and comprehensive program in the commercial real estate industry. This award recognizes HSBC Place’s excellence in building management, energy conservation and overall building quality.
LEED (which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the predominant North American rating system and benchmark for sustainability in real estate and construction, rewarding the top tier of buildings for their performance on energy, carbon, and water efficiency, low carbon transportation, landscaping, materials, air quality, and innovation. The goal is to improve operational efficiency while reducing environmental impacts and improving tenant comfort.
Grounded in medical research, WELL is a performance-based system for measuring, certifying and monitoring features of buildings that impact human health and wellbeing. WELL focuses on 7 wellness concepts: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind.
Energy Star® Score identifies the efficiency of HSBC Place, ranking performance and energy consumption. The rating recognizes the building as an energy efficient commercial building and a top class energy performer in Canada.
WIRED CERTIFIED Platinum (Achieved)
Wired Certification rates and recognizes commercial office buildings that are providing the most advanced and resilient digital infrastructure in the market. HSBC Place is the first building to be certified Wired Platinum in Edmonton because we believe reliable digital connectivity is critical for our tenants to operate their businesses successfully.
Why is certification important? It helps us manage key sustainability priorities and holds us accountable for our commitment to our tenants. Here is a full overview of the initiatives at HSBC Place: HSBC Place Case Study

Improving the operational performance HSBC Place goes beyond building systems – it’s a team effort and we need our tenant’s support.
We host sustainability-related events and green team activities each year to get our tenants involved with our efforts as we reduce our environmental impacts, improve health and well-being outcomes and save on costs.
We encourage our tenants to create Green Teams within their offices to incorporate our principles of sustainability across all operations.
